New Perspectives on Transpacific Connections – The Americas and the South Pacific
International Conference, LMU Munich April 25 - 28, 2013
The conference “New Perspectives on Transpacific Connections” held at the Department of Social and Cultural Anthropology, LMU Munich, brings diverse perspectives on connections between the Americas and the South Pacific into dialogue and explores a wide range of linkages between these cultural spaces. It aims to reach beyond East-Asian-Latin American collaborations and to include rather neglected Southern linkages. It asks how these connections have developed over time, which local responses they have generated, and what impact these processes have in the region. Speakers from seven countries and 14 disciplines will discuss historical dimensions and current issues, including migration, economy and trade; cultural exchange across the Pacific; material culture and heritage; colonial legacies and indigenous perspectives on transpacific connections.
